Perry Lowell Bent Artist's Statement I am a fiber artist working with the colors and textures of wool, silk, and other fibers using various techniques-freeform crochet, knitting, weaving, and felting. My work is inspired by my joy playing outside as a child-climbing trees, splashing through brooks and streams, lying in a meadow watching the grasses sway, jumping waves at the ocean, gardening with my grandmother, sitting around a campfire at night, telling stories with my mother and siblings in the dark of a tent in the woods, and waking up in a warm sleeping bag to a crisp morning with the smell of wood smoke in the air. Both imbued me with the love of the world around me. My love of fiber derives from my artistically talented mother, who wrote, drew, crocheted, hooked and braided rugs, and embroidered with an incredible eye for color and texture; and from my grandmother, who was a creative and impeccable seamstress. My wall pieces are landscape impressions of nature, the joy and awe of the natural world, and the passage of time. Their intent is to invite the viewer to touch and experience the multisensory aspects of fiber art. Clouds are especially emotive to me. I also create wearable art with nuno felt, felt, and crochet to invite the direct sensory pleasure of fiber on skin. I also spin, weave, and enjoy needlearts. I enjoy the freedom of taking traditional womens' craft to a new level with freeform crochet and other non-traditional techniques. Fiber, as old as humankind, means comfort and survival. Women since ancient times have transformed utility into creativity. I feel anchored in time and space to share the love of fiber with the generations of women who came before me. I need the
sensory overload of fiber to stay sane, and the continuous learning experience
to stay alive. |
