A valentine to keep
by LaVonne Boruk
red shadows drifted across your face
as you handed to me a tiny envelope,
I took it gingerly, wondering
what was inside, and was surprised to learn
that you had written words about
forever, and yesterday, and tomorrow,
beneath a lacy heart that Cupid's arrow
pierced, allowing blood to drip,
hand-sketched children were busy at play,
a house with picket fence stood
in the background. the mailbox
near the road bore a crude sign,
"Love lives here. 13517 Sincerity Lane."
shyly, I looked up into your eyes.
time stood still; my heart melted
in the warm glow of your love.
