A Slice of Life

WEN Cleansing Conditioner

Forget about the old instructions to “Rinse. Lather. Repeat.” With wen cleansing conditioners, there is no lather. Frankly, it’s hard to get used to washing your hair without the lather, but as developer/stylist Chaz Dean says, shampoos contain detergent and who wants to put detergent on their hair? Certainly not me.

WEN is not a shampoo. It is a “cleansing conditioner.” Think about this. Cleansing and conditioning in one step, and getting healthier hair in the process. “I developed the process of cleansing and conditioning in 1993,” says the stylist to some pretty high A-List celebs.

Ok, so just how do you use WEN? When you get into the shower, rinse your hair thoroughly. Then apply the wen product and gently massage it on your scalp and through your hair, just like you would do with a regular shampoo. Add a splash of H2O to make sure it’s evenly distributed. If you have long hair, you should comb your hair and clip it up. Now, just leave the product in your hair while you shower and before you are finished and ready to step out, rinse your hair thoroughly. That’s it. One step. If you want, you can add a dollop of WEN to your wet hair for styling, however personally I don’t like to do that as I found my hair was a little too slick when I did it. But everyone has different hair, so it might be worthwhile in your case.

And speaking of my hair, it is thick, wavy, and course. Without constant styling it’s unmanageable. So I have tried all the different hair products that have come down the line over the years, hoping for that one miracle product. Wen is the closest thing I’ve found so far. After only using it a few days, my stylist mentioned that my hair was “so soft.” She couldn’t believe it. When I went back a few weeks later she was still amazed at how soft my hair is. This is the first time any stylist has ever noticed a change in my hair. And believe me, I’ve tried a lot of products over the years.

Each product is created for a specific hair type, but they are all free from harsh, damaging ingredients. When I was asked by the representative about my hair, I was “prescribed” the Fig, however I also got the Sweet Almond Mint to see the difference in the products and the fragrances. The one thing I am not completely happy with is the fragrance. They are nice smelling, however I prefer for my hair to smell like a Pina Colada or something with a tropical or fruity scent. But if this stuff helps make my hair soft and manageable, I can get used to the scent. It’s pleasant enough, just very different from what I’ve been used to over the years.

The different cleansing conditioners are: Sweet Almond Mint, Cucumber Aloe, Fig, Tea Tree, and Lavender. The amount of product you use depends on the length of your hair. And if you have exceptionally dry, damaged hair, they say you can leave it on your hair overnight and rinse it out in the morning for a hydrating mask.

The line of wen also includes styling cream, oils, and a balm. You can add whatever you need for your hair type. Halle Berry, Julianna Margulies, Christina Applegate, and thousands of other people are happy wen users. There are bath and body treatments, but for the most part wen is known for making hair clean and healthy.

If you can get used to not lathering your hair (I still have a hard time with that, but I use a facial cleanser that doesn’t lather either), and not smelling like a tropical drink, this is a great product. It really has made a difference in my hair.

Now I know “when” to say “wen.”
