A Slice of Life
by Francine Brokaw
The Last Mimzy
Years in the future civilization is missing an important component - a quality of humanity that had been turned off but is a necessary element for the survival of human beings. So the people in the future send several “stuffed rabbits” back to various times in history to try to capture this missing ingredient. The rabbits, named Mimzy, are part electronic and part organic, and very cute. So far none of them have returned to the future with the desired component. The last one, which was sent to our time, is the last hope for the survival of civilization.
While on vacation at their beach house, two kids, Emma and Noah, find a mysterious box and soon discover it contains magic “toys,” one of which is Mimzy, which Emma takes to her heart. When they realize the toys are magical, the kids decide to keep them a secret from their parents – at least until they figure out what they actually are. Mimzy communicates with Emma and teaches her things. Soon Noah and Emma possess extraordinary intelligence, beyond the realm of genius. Their strange behavior and newfound intelligence at first makes their parents proud but a little concerned. Emma has always been a highly gifted child, so they figure it is Noah’s turn to excel as well. But soon they become worried, especially when Emma is discovered levitating.
While playing with the new toys, Noah sets off an energy force that causes a large power outage throughout the state. This alerts the Department of Homeland Security and agents are dispatched to find the source of the outage.
In the meantime, Emma realizes Mimzy has an important mission for them. But soon the family is caught in the middle of a national security emergency and Emma has to find a way to help Mimzy complete the mission while the family has to prove they are not terrorists.
Emma is a rare soul who possesses the pure quality that is necessary to save the future of humanity. This beguiling story has a little magic, a little whimsy, a lot of fun and an abundance of imagination. It’s a fanciful tale about a quixotic little girl who is filled with love and wonder. It is Emma who must save humanity.
