A Slice of Life

Barry Manilow – The Greatest Songs of the Sixties

Even if you weren’t around in the 1960s, you’ve definitely heard the songs on this CD. Barry Manilow has chosen some of the most popular songs that represent the decade’s music. And, he gives them that special Manilow touch that no one else can.

From the first note, you’ll realize that this is a special CD. With heartfelt lyrics and memorable tunes, these songs hit on every feeling. From the fun “Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head” to the sincere “When I Fall in Love,” Manilow has captured the most loved songs that took us through a tumultuous decade.

He is joined by The Association in a whimsical combination of “Cherish” and “Windy,” which will take you back to the 60s in an instant!

Sometimes when a big music star records a song, it is difficult for another singer to record that same song, as it has been stamped by the original singer. But Manilow manages to take some well-known songs by some very well-known singers and make them new again. People automatically relate “Everybody Loves Somebody” with Dean Martin, and rightly so as this was his theme song. But when Manilow sings this song all memories of Martin are gone as he sings the soulful lyrics.

The Beatles’ “And I Love Her” is another example of how Barry Manilow can take an established song and turn it into something different and uniquely Manilow. After hearing this rendition fans will be pleading with the singer for a CD of Beatles songs. Why not? He’s already tackled Sinatra, so perhaps he has a Beatles CD in the offing. One can only hope.

When he starts singing “Blue Velvet,” any memories of the Bobby Vinton version will be wiped out as Barry puts his special styling to these lyrics.

The remaining tracks on the CD are “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love” (look out Elvis!), “There’s a Kind of Hush,” “This Guy’s in Love With You,” “You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feelin’,” “Strangers in the Night,” and he ends the disc with the anthem of the decade, “What the World Needs Now is Love.”

Many people might think of Barry Manilow as just a romantic singer. He does have a way of singing a love song that captures the heartstrings of listeners. He has definitely got a special appeal. After all, he’s lasted over 3 decades and is just as popular today – even more so – than he was in the 70s. When you listen to a Barry Manilow song, it’s as though he’s singing just to you. And being serenaded by Barry Manilow is something women around the world fantasize about.

This newest CD is filled with memorable songs done in the Manilow style. His last CD, Greatest Songs of the Fifties was a big seller, and this new one will be even more popular with fans of the music, Manilow fans, and closet Manilow fans! We know who you are! If you love great music, this is a fabulous CD. And if you love Barry Manilow, this is a must-have.
