A Slice of Life
by Francine Brokaw
Flicka
Spectacular scenery highlights this family film about love, caring, and destiny. When Katie (Alison Lohman) finds a wild mustang, she immediately feels a connection with her and wants to keep her. She names the horse Flicka, which means beautiful young girl. Her father (Tim McGraw) has other plans for the wild animal. Katie and her father are at odds with each other on so many things, mainly because they are so much alike. He loves his ranch and the land, as does she. Her heart is in Wyoming, on the land and with all the horses. Her brother on the other hand is not planning on staying at the ranch. He wants to get away and explore the outside, something Katie doesn’t quite understand. She feels like she belongs in Wyoming, and no where else.
While disobeying her father’s orders to stay away from the wild mustang, Katie sneaks out at night to be with the horse. They form a bond that will, in the end, prove a lifesaving force for both of them.
This is a story about following one’s heart. With the odds being against her, Katie has to find a way to keep Flicka with her. And, while doing so, her father has to find a way to keep Katie’s love. Maria Bello stars as the mother who sees more than anyone and knows that Katie is only following her heart’s desire, as she should.
Family dynamics are a big part of this story, as both children are at odds with their father over different reasons. He is a strict man who doesn’t like to stray from his values, but learns that even a branch has to bend in order not to break.
This film is rated PG for some mild language. This film will transport audiences to the open country of Wyoming where the sky touches the mountains, and where the Wild West is still a little wild.
