A Slice of Life
by Francine Brokaw

You Me and Dupree

Kate Hudson (Molly) just married the man of her dreams. Carl (Matt Dillon) is adoring, loving, and a good friend – not only to Molly but to his best pal Dupree (Owen Wilson). So, when Dupree is down on his luck, Carl offers to let him stay at their house until he gets back on his feet. Molly is a little put-off by this. After all, they are newlyweds. But being a kind-hearted woman she agrees to let Dupree spend a few days.

Then the few days turns into indefinitely! Dupree makes himself at home in their house and has no intention of finding a job or moving out. He and Carl have been best friends forever, and he intends on keeping it that way - even though Carl is now married. In many ways Dupree just cannot grow up, but in many ways he is more mature than anyone can see.

Dupree ends up driving a wedge between Carl and Molly, although unintentional. He just wants them to all be the best of friends. So, what’s a little fire in the house between best friends?

Besides dealing with Dupree and setting up a new life with Molly, Carl has one more dilemma in his life – his boss Mr. Thompson (Michael Douglas), who just happens to be Molly’s dad. There is a lot of animosity between these two men. Carl does everything he can think of to appease his father-in-law/boss, but nothing is good enough.

In the meantime, Dupree and Molly form a strong bond and their friendship grows. This crazy story of love and friendship is humorous and clever. Although billed as a comedy, there is a lot of emotion in the film. Own Wilson is perfect as the zany, annoying and yet loveable Dupree, and Kate Hudson glows as Molly, the loving and sympathetic friend/wife.
