A Slice of Life

Coupling - Season 1 on DVD
Take Sex and the City and add a touch of Friends and you have the hilarious BBC comedy, Coupling. For those who are lucky enough to have BBC America on their cable or satellite systems, you might have stumbled across this delightful series. If you haven't yet discovered it, or if you don't get BBC America, take heart. The first season is now available on DVD.
The series centers on six friends. Just like Friends there are three women and three men. But unlike Friends, these six have had past relationships with each other. Here's the rundown: Susan used to be with Patrick but is now with Steve who used to be with Jane. Susan's friend Sally now has her eye on Patrick. Steve's friend Jeff (a "pioneer of paranoia") had a crush on Susan, and Jane has her eye on everyone.
The DVD includes the 6 episodes of the season, each lasting about 30 minutes, and each filling in more and more about the mixed-up group of people who each have one thing on their minds: sex. But this series isn't raunchy. It's done with a lot of humor. A LOT of humor, and cleverness. And with no subject being out of bounds, most viewers will delight in the way the characters tackle the topics. The creator says it is a modern series designed to show how men and women view things so differently. And that's the truth.
Okay. So you think a British series might be difficult to understand. Sometimes they do use a few words and phrases that are "foreign" to us in the United States, but the meanings are definitely clear. This series is a gem.
The third season has just begun, and the second season is in reruns. To catch up on the characters and their lives, the first season DVD is a must. And it will leave you anxiously waiting for the second season to be released. Coupling- Season 1 has a suggested price of $24.98. One word of warning: the series centers on sex, so if you are not comfortable with that subject, this is not for you. But for the others, enjoy!
