1. CONVERSATION STARTERS

SINK THE SALT!

According to the American Heart Association, high blood pressure is one of the leading causes of heart disease – and one proven way to lower blood pressure is to consume less salt. The new USDA Dietary Guidelines urge Americans to decrease sodium consumption to less than 2,300 mg per day, yet the average American consumes 4,000 mg per day, which is almost double

A  free online Mrs. Dash Sodium Stoppers program (www.mrsdash.com)  is designed to encourage men and women to eliminate unnecessary salt from their diets.  By signing up for Sodium Stoppers, participants will make a 12-week commitment to follow the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH)[i] Eating Plan, developed by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute – and ultimately take the first step to improve overall eating habits.  Consumers who visit the site will be introduced to the DASH Eating Plan, low-salt recipes, tips on how to limit salt intake and more.

Mrs. Dash has also made a three-year commitment to be one of the national sponsors of the American Heart Association’s Choose To Move program, a free 12-week physical activity program which will help Americans recognize the importance exercise plays in a heart healthy lifestyle.  As part of their commitment, Mrs. Dash will donate $.25 to the American Heart Association’s Choose To Move program for every person who makes a pledge to Sodium Stoppers and signs up from now until 12/31/05.  An additional $.10 will be donated to the American Heart Association’s Choose To Move program, for every Mrs. Dash product purchased between now and 7/31/05.

2. NEW PRODUCTS

This must be new product launch time because we had trouble keeping up with the bounty that appeared at the door and on Email. Here are a couple worth noting…

NATURAL CHOICE ORGANIC SORBETS

These yummy, flavorful sorbets boast fat-free, dairy-free, and cholesterol-free with no additives or preservatives. Usually, when I read advertising like that, I think "flavor-and taste-free) but Natural Choice proved me wrong this time. Their solid ice sorbets are filled with fruit and quite delicious. They're available in 7 flavors chock full of fruity taste and the colors that go with them. The flavors are raspberry, strawberry, blueberry, banana, lemon, mango, and strawberry. I served them recently over fruit, each dish with a different colored sorbet, and it was a feast to behold. As a bonus, Natural Choice sorbets are so icy delicious that you can use them to mix with tequila for scrumptious flavored margaritas. Instead of ice, use the sorbet. Natural Choice products are usually available in  health food stores. See below for the margarita recipe.

CHEW-ETS FROM JUST BORN

I've never liked the marshmallow candies from Just Born but they've hit onto a new concept with their Chew-et  Candy Chews in different flavors. They're packaged like a candy bar but open the package and there are 6 smaller finger sized bars within. They come in a couple of different flavors loaded with peanuts. Just Born bought another company that had been marketing these bars on the East coast, now they will be available nationally.

3. RECIPES IN SEASON

MEDITERRANEAN GOAT CHEESE PIZZA

This whole pizza takes under 30 minutes to prepare, and the results are as

impressive as pies from your favorite pizza parlor. Recipe by Kathy Gunst for Ile de France®

One 20-ounce package of pizza dough*

2 teaspoons olive oil

2 teaspoons tomato paste

1 large ripe tomato, very thinly sliced, or 10 sun-dried tomatoes, drained

4 ounces marinated artichoke hearts, drained

4 ounces crumbled plain goat cheese, such as Ile de France

8 anchovy filets, drained, optional

1/4 cup walnuts, coarsely chopped, optional

Freshly ground black pepper

*Prepared pizza dough can be purchased at local supermarkets or at your favorite pizza parlor

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.

Working on a well-floured surface, roll out the dough into two 7-inch rounds. Place the pizza rounds on a cookie sheet. Using the back of a spoon, spread 1 teaspoon oil and 1 teaspoon tomato paste on each pizza dough. Line the tomatoes on top and then add the artichoke hearts. Scatter the goat cheese on top and then place the anchovies on each pizza, if using, and sprinkle with walnuts, if using and pepper. Bake on the middle shelf for 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the dough is golden brown. Serves 2 as a meal, and 4-8 as a snack food.

 DONA's QUICK MORROCAN COUSCOUS

This is an almost fool proof recipe that can combine any type of ingredients you may have available. Cook the vegetables in the microwave, use a store bought (or your own) cooked chicken and toss it all together in under 20 minutes. Elegant enough for company.

1 onion –purple or white

¼ cup olive oil

1 cup small carrots

2 small potatoes or 1 large sweet potato cut in ½ inch slicres

½  cup pitted prunes

1/2 cup raisins

1 can chicken soup

1 teaspoon curry powder

¾  cup uncooked or 1 whole cooked chicken cut up into bite size portions.

2 tbls frozen orange juice, not diluted.

cut up onion and sauté in large pot Meanwhile, put potatoes in microwave and cook about 4 minutes. Cook carrots in microwave and cook about 6 minutes. Cook carrots in microwave. About 7 minutes on high.. Add potatoes and carrots to onions in pot. Add prunes, raisins, 1 can chicken soup, orange juice and about ½ cup water and curry powder. Heat chicken in pot. Stir in the couscous, turn off heat and let stand about 5 minutes or until cous cous is puffy. Serve. There will almost always be leftovers when it tastes just as good.

4. OLLA PODRIDA

World's Largest Chocolate Easter Egg by Guylian Chocolates

To celebrate the renovation of Belgium’s largest market square in Sint-Niklaas on Easter weekend, Chocolaterie Guylian created the world’s largest chocolate Easter egg sculpture. And it earned space in the Guinness Book of Records.

The world’s largest edible egg is 27 feet three inches tall, 21 feet wide and weighs 4,299 pounds. Guinness World Records has certified the endeavor by Belgian chocolate maker Guylian

Twenty-six Guylian master chocolate makers took eight days and used 50,000 Guylian Praline chocolate bars – which feature the company’s signature seashell chocolates – to construct the egg. Metal scaffolding with wooden panels created a “shell” to support the egg, a feat of engineering and culinary know-how. All chocolate used was produced at Guylian headquarters in Sint-Niklaas.

Chocolaterie Guylian is the world’s leading manufacturer of premium boxed Belgian chocolates, one of the leading importers of Belgian chocolates into the U.S., and one of the fastest-growing brands in major markets worldwide, selling in 140 countries. U.S. headquarters are in Englewood Cliffs, N.J.
