1.      CONVERSATION SPARKERS

ARE WE BEING GEHRY-IFIED?

It seems that Frank Gehry's Architecture will bring a new historical style to the world. Almost every article I see lately announces a new Gehry building or addition. Last week I noted that the Toronto Museum of Art will have a new wing under an undulating Gehry roof. This week, I read where Chicago just installed a band shell in their new Millennium Park. Covered by a Gehry structure.

Gehry's innovative architecture was wonderfully refreshing when it appeared on the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. It was the talk of the town, and much further afield when the Disney Music Center in Los Angeles was completed. Then there is the Music building in Seattle. The Ray and Maria State Center, on the MIT campus, Fishdance Restaurant Kobe, Japan, and even in Prague, there is the Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire building.

Yes, they are all unique but there are so many Gehry's  that they are no longer so unique. I think we are being Gehry-ified. Check out his buildings at several sites under his name and see what you think.

2.      NEW PRODUCTS

NEW MOPS TAKE THE FLOOR

If you're still ringing out mops and dealing with heavy buckets of water, look into the new throw away mops that take the chore out washing a floor. There are a couple of brands on the market: Clorox and Scotch Brite advertise heavily. You buy the mop handle and head and a starter package of dry and wet sheets for about $15.00. From then on, you buy only the refill sheets and they work beautifully. A rectangular sheet of the product imbued with the cleanser fits over the mob bottom, folds over and each corner tucks into a gripper hole on the top. When you're finished mopping, just pull out the sheet and toss it away.

The dry sheets are for wood floors and perfect for dusting without the mop. The wet sheets are for linoleum, tile, and any other floor material. One sheet will cover the size of most kitchens; on bigger areas, you may need two sheets. The wet ones may also be used for hand cleaning hard to reach spots. A nice feature of the mop head is that it is very thin so it easily reaches beneath kitchen counter bases and low furniture. So don't wring mops, don't wring your hands when it's time to clean your floor, just whip out a quick mop and you'll save time, energy, and maybe even money on cleaning help. It's too easy.

3.      RECIPES IN SEASON

EASY POTATO PUDDING

Makes a delicious side dish instead of potato salad. Serve hot with applesauce.

1 tablespoon oil for greasing pan

6 medium baking potatoes peeled and grated

3 eggs or equivalent egg substitute
1 large onion
1 teaspoon salt
 White pepper
1/4 cup oil, heated to almost boiling in the microwave

Grease a 9 X 9 in. baking pan or a 10 in. pie pan with the oil. Peel the potatoes and grate them with the onion in a food processor. Squeeze out excess water. Whisk the eggs in a large bowl. Quickly add the potatoes to the beaten eggs so they don't discolor. Add seasonings and hot oil. Place in the pan and smooth the top. Bake in a 425 degree F oven for approximately 1 hour or until the bottom and top are crisp. This recipe can be doubled. Serves 6 to 8.

GOAT CHEESE NOODLE PUDDING

The recipe calls for dried apricot and cherries, but any dried fruits may be substituted. Try dried cranberries for Thanksgiving and the holidays because of the colors and flavors. Perfect for making ahead of time.

8 ounces wide egg noodles, cooked, and drained
8 eggs or egg substitute equivalent
12 ounces mild goat cheese
6 ounces Neufchatel cream cheese
2 cups sour cream
3 /4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 teaspoon orange zest or orange flavoring

1/2 cup raisins
1/4 cup each dried fruit cut up: apricots and dried cherries
1/2 cup orange preserves, melted

Preheat over to 350 degrees. Line an 8 X 8 square glass baking dish with non-stick foil

In large bowl beat the eggs and add the cheeses, sour cream, and sugar vanilla and orange flavoring; mix well. Stir in the dried fruit, blend well. Spread in baking dish, smooth the top. Bake for 45 minutes. Cool. Completely. Turn over onto a bread board; it should slide right out. Peel the foil and slice while upside down. Turn over the slices onto a heat proof tray. Reheat before serving and drizzle hot orange preserves on top. Serves 8.

4.      TRAVEL – THE CLINTON LIBRARY

I'm one of those people who racks up visits to presidential libraries like westerners notched their gun for every kill. So on my travel agenda next year will be Little Rock, Arkansas to see and feel the architecture and ambiance of the William J. Clinton Presidential Center and Park due to open on Nov. 18th.

I have a CD showing the rendering of the building and explaining how it is changing the river front in Little Rock. I'm glad it isn't another Gehry Building so instead of undulating waves of metal it takes the form of a glass bridge. This symbolizes Clinton's theme of "Building a Bridge to the 21st Century

Designed by award-winning architect James Polshek the building also houses a museum, a great hall that seats 350 people for a symposium or 220 seats for a banquet. The exterior glass walls employ the latest in glass technology to provide shading, light control, and energy-efficient operation in the area that requires air conditioning in the summer and heat in the winter.

The exhibits in the museum are designed by Ralph A. Appelbaum who also deigned the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC. Watch the news magazines and the television broadcasts around Nov. 18th so you can be aware about this new addition to Little Rock and the impact it will have on the city. You can view a tour of the library at: http://www.clintonpresidentialcenter.org/.

5.       OLLA PODRIDA

This is a Spanish term for a pot of stew. Literally, olla is a round earthenware pot and podrida is a dish composed of different meats and vegetables.

MEXICAN "FORTUNE COOKIES"

Your have to give Isidro "Sid" Martinez credit. Instead of the proverbial mixed metaphors, he is mixing ethnicity and has "invented" a Mexican fortune cookie. That is a Takito; a small taco with the taste of cinnamon, a signature spice found in Hispanic cultures. Within the folded circular bit of dough, instead of an  English fortune, there is a slip of paper with a dicho (saying or proverb) in both Spanish and English.

If Martinez is lucky, and predicts his own future, the bilingual Takito will become an after-meal staple at Mexican eateries everywhere just as the fortune cookie is pervasive in Chinese restaurants. When you get one from a restaurant or Mexican bakery, remember you saw it here, first.
